Your word is...

Here we are at the CMS spelling bee! It was exciting...they the top three spellers from four different schools and they separated them into 5-6, 7-8th grades. Noah made it through all the preliminary rounds...Then they combined the 5,6,7,8 grades for the final few rounds...He did such a great job! (He was number 12) In about the second or third round from the end...he was eliminated...his word was Pangolin...I'm still not sure if I spelled it right! At least it wasn't ballerina or lithe...(a bunch of kids got eliminated on those words!) I thought he did fabulously!

Patriotism at its Best!

Today we had a very humbling experience as a family. We were privileged and honored to stand together with our community and honor the life of Chief Warrant Officer Matthew G. Kelley. He was a soldier from Cameron, fighting for our freedom and safety. He was a helicopter pilot who died in a crash in Iraq. We came together to show our love and support for the men and women who serve our country as well as the family of CWO Matthew Kelley who have lost someone they loved very much. The anti-American protesters from Fred Phelps Church were planning on being there today but, thankfully I never saw them. They would have absolutely been blocked out and outnumbered. I was so pleased to see the support and love from our town...it made me proud of us. It was so moving to see all the veterans in their uniforms, the men and women who serve as Police Officers, Firemen, Ambulance, the Marines, the Navy, the Army....they lined up along the streets side by side with hundreds of Harley Davidson bikers. They stood shoulder to shoulder among rows of flags. The bagpipers played Amazing Grace and many other lovely songs. The mood was very somber...we were there over two hours but, many were there much longer, and I didn't hear any complaints. It was a very special day and I am glad that we were able to be there for it. If you would like to read more about CWO Matthew G. Kelley click here, for an absolutely beautiful slideshow of the day click here. It is hard to describe this experience....it brought out such strong emotions...loyalty, love, pride, gratitude, sadness, and joy. The kids kept asking why I was crying and I tried to explain it to them but, it is hard to put into words. He gave his life for our freedom. And I, for one, am grateful. Thank you Matthew Kelley.

Storms of life

Mortality is a period of testing, a time to prove ourselves worthy to return to the presence of our Heavenly Father. In order to be tested, we must sometimes face challenges and difficulties. At times there appears to be no light at the tunnel’s end—no dawn to break the night’s darkness. We feel surrounded by the pain of broken hearts, the disappointment of shattered dreams, and the despair of vanished hopes. We join in uttering the biblical plea “Is there no balm in Gilead?” We are inclined to view our own personal misfortunes through the distorted prism of pessimism. We feel abandoned, heartbroken, alone. If you find yourself in such a situation, I plead with you to turn to our Heavenly Father in faith. He will lift you and guide you. He will not always take your afflictions from you, but He will comfort and lead you with love through whatever storm you face.

Thomas S. Monson, “Looking Back and Moving Forward,” Ensign, May 2008, 87–90

Lately it feels like my life is just one storm after another...and I really need that comfort and peace to get through it. I hope this works.

Isaacs Project

So, last night we had week two of our beginning quilt class. Around 10:00 I got a phone call from Erinn...apparently Isaac had a project due and was in tears. Isaac and I had talked about this project before and he insisted that he didn't want to do it and it wasn't important! Funny how that changes the night before it was due! So, this morning we got up early (5am) and put this little project together. It is on the Red Milk Snake. I got lucky having all the supplies we needed including a small plastic snake that we painted to look like the Red Milk Snake! I think it turned out great for the limited amount of time we had. Hope he gets a good grade!

*on a side note...Noah will be representing his school (along with three other girls) in the 5th grade County Spelling Bee. We'll let you know how it goes...wish him luck!

**and Sam is really struggling with his grades in school right now...I could use some advice on how to get my boy to take it a bit more seriously and bring up those grades. (they certainly can't get lower:( He's 12 and I think that he should be responsible for them himself but some parents have suggested going into the school myself and getting his assignments and really babysitting him through school work...I just don't know what to do.

what a roller coaster ride this whole mommy thing is!

Man Quilts...:)

This has been a fun week at the shop! As many of you know, mom broke her leg...so, I have been training and filling in for her at the quilt machine! I have really enjoyed the creative challenge and I love to see all the different things people make and love! This week we had two "man quilts" The first quilt pictured is our Star Wars Quilt. The top is white on one side and black on the other and he wanted the star wars design stitched on! It turned out better than I expected! The second one is a Chiefs Quilt that we put a helmet and football pattern on! I am thrilled that men love their quilts too, and also surprised at how great they look. I think the machine quilting is wonderful and it really can take an ordinary quilt and make it extraordinary! Good Stuff!

Quilts!

Here is a picture of my New Year's Eve Mystery quilt!
It turned out cute I think...even if my points don't match! I know I can only get better!
I am excited about the Kansas City Star Quilt that I will be working on and the applique block of the month that I am going to try! (applique is harder than I thought it would be:(

When I saw this fabric I just knew I had to have it! So I bought a few layer cakes and I am going to make an hourglass/four patch out of it. I will be just for me! I can't wait to get to work on it!
Isn't this fabric just so cute??!! I LOVE it!!!

Just a bit down...

It may be S.A.D but, lately it seems that everything gets me down...These made me laugh! They each fit my struggles and feelings...many of them overlap, working well for more than one issue. May everyone in my life(including me:) get well, be healed, get over it, and be HAPPY!!! Have a great day! Winter is long!
